Are BMX Stem Bolts Universal? (Explained!)

Stem bolts are being used for many years to fasten the objects more tightly. The stem bolts come in different sizes and shapes but are they universal when it comes to BMX stem fasteners.

Are BMX stem bolts universal?

The BMX stem bolts are only universal for BMX bikes. The different sizes of stem bolts includes 5/16″, M5, M6, M8, etc. but for a perfect stem set up it is better if you measure diameter of your stem bolt. Otherwise, the stem bolt will not be tighten perfectly and may cause twist on the steerer.

BMX stem bolts come up with different sizes and measurements. So, it can be universal for only the BMX bikes or else they aren’t universal. If you do want to fit them in other bikes, you need to take the actual measurement of the bolts.

Due to variation in the diameter of the head, all stems do not fit the forks of all types of bikes. While replacing your stem, make sure the stem holds the bars tightly, and the stem is according to your size.

What size are BMX stem bolts?

There are different sizes of BMX stem bolts out there. Such as 5/16″, M5, M6, M8, etc.

For the M5 BMX stem bolt, M refers to the Metric designation for bolts, and 5refers to the bolt’s diameter measured in millimeters. For M5 bolts, the thread’s standard pitch is 0.8mm.

For the M6 BMX stem bolt, its diameter is 6mm, and the thread’s standard pitch is 1.0mm.

For the M8 BMX stem bolt, its diameter is 8mm. For M8 bolts, the thread’s standard pitch is either 1.0mm or 1.25mm. Here, 1.25mm is the standard measurement. The threaded portion’s length is about 24mm, but overall its length is 33mm. The diameter of the head is 11mm.

Are stem bolts universal for all bikes?

How to replace BMX stem?

Replacing the BMX stem is not a hard task. Let us start with the removal of the old stem:

Most of the BMX stem are nowadays very similar. It does not matter whether they are top-load or front-load; they have a four bolts system.

The four bolts system bolts the bars on tightly. Here we are going to replace an FSA black eye stem for the BMX bike, which is a threadless stem.

While you remove the stem, you may use a bike stand, or you can just keep the bike on the ground. Mainly, there are three things to loosen and tighten: the compression bolt into the fork, the stem bolts that clamp it onto the fork, and the bolts that clamp the bars.

Start by loosening the bolt that clamps to the forks. Then loosen the compression bolt. This is done because the compression bolt holds the headset and everything tightened together.

Loosen all the bolts carefully and quickly. Next, loosen the bars. When you loosen the handlebars, give it a turn in a star pattern. It helps to save your bolts from damage. Take off everything smoothly and straightly.

Then, by loosening the bolts, take out the back-right bolt completely. Remove the handlebars, then. Then remove the top cap and take off the stem completely.

Next is the installation of a new stem:

If your new stem has a different thickness than your old stem, you may need to add or remove spacers. Make sure that your fork is a little bit shorter than your stem. You don’t want the top cap nut to actually hit the fork.

Put the spacer into the fork. Then put the stem in its position correctly. Line up the stem so that it installs on the fork easily. Then put the compression stem bolt back in.

Remove the front stem cap by taking out the top right bolt completely. Install the handlebars in their desired position. Put the front stem cap to its correct position. You can apply a little bit of grease to the threads of these bolts. Get all the bolts to the thread in straight. Then tighten it just a little bit. Make you’re your handlebar is put in the center position.

If needed, you can get on your bike and see everything is perfect and comfortable. Then tighten the bolts fully so that there is no gap between the cap and the actual stem on the top and bottom and make sure they are the same. Get all the bolts at the same tightness. You may use a torque wrench for that. Tightening up to 8nm is perfect.

How do you tighten a BMX stem?

While replacing a stem, it is required to tighten the BMX stem. Configuring the stem to the fork, putting the compression stem bolt-on, and putting the handlebars to their desired position, it’s now required to tighten the bolts of the front stem cap.
