Can Crickets Climb Walls? (All You Need to Know)

Insects are natural climbers. But that does not apply to all insects. There might be some avid climbers and there might be some who can’t climb or even crawl on flat surfaces.

Can crickets climb walls?

Walls are no issue for crickets. They are known to be one of the best climbers in the world of insects. And among the other climbing insects, these insects tend to be more active and far better than most of their kind. The crickets can climb flat surfaces with absolutely no difficulty at all.

Crickets are avid climbers who do not have any difficulty climbing on flat surfaces. This means these insects are good to climb up the walls of your house. Though there are many types of crickets, almost all types of cricket have this talent of climbing walls-

Camel crickets:

Camel crickets are great climbers. They tend to jump and climb without making any sort of chirping and noise. Which is very unusual for the entire kind of crickets. These crickets tend to crawl up the walls at night when there are no lights on, a little bit creepy.

Spider crickets:

As their name suggests, the spider crickets tend to jump and crawl up the walls whenever they feel like it. It is easy for them and this type of cricket does like the thrill of climbing walls and flat surfaces.

Cave crickets:

Cave crickets have longer legs compared to the rest of the types of crickets. This allows them to climb and crawl the walls easier than the other insects. And they tend to utilize this ability of theirs very often.

Green crickets:

Vertical surfaces and flat walls are no issue for the green cricket. They are excellent climbers and will crawl up the walls with great agility and pace in no time.

Crickets are jumpy insects and they tend to not only jump on walls but also climb them very fast. No flat surface is a problem for these chirpy and fast climbers. They can climb the tallest of walls quickly.

Why do crickets climb walls?

Crickets are very jumpy creatures. They like to jump and crawl as a natural instinct. Most of the time you will find crickets chirping in your house and on the walls. There may be several reasons why a cricket will jump and climb your walls so easily and frequently-

Damp walls:

Crickets, like other insects, are fond of the dampness of walls during the rainy season. This is why in these seasons you will find a lot of crickets crawling up the walls of your house.

If the walls of your house are almost always damp and give off a bit of wet type of texture, there is a good chance that it will attract a lot of crickets. Make sure to fix this problem.

Bathroom walls:

The walls in the bathroom are almost always very moist and have a humid atmosphere to them. This is why the crickets are mostly found in the bathrooms of the house. The moisture of the walls is the favorite condition for cricket to climb a wall.

Instinct:

Crickets have long legs and a fast pace. This gives them a natural rush to climb and crawl up surfaces of all sorts. Even if the surface is flat and horizontal, like the walls of your house. They will climb it with much ease.

An insect will be very moving and fast-paced. But even among the insects, crickets tend to have a good liking for climbing and crawling up walls. But make sure to not let them stick around.

What can crickets not climb?

Crickets being very jumpy insects, it is only very natural to expect them to climb all sorts of surfaces. But that is not true. Even crickets have their limitations when it comes to climbing and jumping. There are some types of surfaces and walls that even the crickets can’t climb-

Smooth plastic:

Plastic surfaces are not the best situations for crickets to climb over. The insect can crawl and climb over any surface except the smooth plastic surfaces. The walls of most houses are not plastic, nor do the walls have a layer of plastic.

This is why crickets find it easier to climb over the walls of the houses.

Glass surface:

Glasses are the same as plastic for crickets. The surface is very smooth for the crickets. Their legs can’t hold the grip on these sorts of surfaces. This is why crickets can’t climb over glass walls or glass surfaces.

Sticky surfaces:

If the wall’s surface is sticky it is likely that the insect will get stuck along it at one point. They will not be able to climb up even if they wanted to. This is why some people place clear strapping tape along their walls to stop the crickets from getting on the walls.

Even the avid climbing insect has its’ own limitation. Crickets will easily climb and crawl over any adverse surface but there are some surfaces that are too difficult for them. And in some situations, they will not be able to climb the wall at all.

How do I keep crickets out of my walls?

Crickets can be very annoying and harmful to your house and walls. This is why you should take measures to stop the crickets from climbing your wall as soon as you notice one or more. There are many ways to stop a cricket infestation in your walls-

Sweet molasses:

Crickets are very fond of the sweet smell of molasses. Mix water and molasses together in a bowl and use it as bait. Once crickets are stuck in the bowl throw the solution out with the crickets.

Chemical solution:

There is some chemical solution found in the hardware stores. They smell like molasses but these solutions will terminate the insects. The crickets get attracted by the smell of the solution.

Bug spray:

Use the regular bug sprays to stop the crickets from climbing the walls. These sprays can knock out the insects and will sometimes terminate them as well.

Sticky traps:

Try to find where the majority of the crickets stay or hide. Use the age-old trick of placing a sticky trap over there so the crickets get stuck there and can’t go around the walls.

Vacuum the eggs:

This can be difficult but if you find the cricket eggs the best way is to vacuum them right away. This works for adult crickets as well, but they are a bit difficult to find and catch.

Use any of the mentioned tricks to get rid of crickets from infiltrating your walls. Make sure to be careful with the chemicals.

Can crickets also penetrate walls?

Being avid climbers, crickets can easily go over any flat wall and surface with much ease. But these insects can’t break through and get into the walls. They will occasionally lay eggs between the small space of two walls. But they are not strong enough to penetrate a wall.

Finding a crickets nest in between walls is very common. In fact, if you see even a single cricket on your wall make sure to check between the nooks and crooks of the walls. You might find a big nest of crickets. It is very common.

However, there is little chance of the crickets getting inside the walls. The small insects are not strong enough to penetrate through the walls of the house. So you can rest assured of that. Still, you should not take them lightly. Make sure to get rid of them as soon as you spot one.

How do you get rid of cricket you can’t find?

This can be very tricky, but it is a common problem. Many times you will hear the chirping sound of the cricket but you will not be able to find the actual cricket. This problem has a very particular solution that involves a little bit of “do it yourself”-

  • Mix molasses with water in a bowl;
  • Keep the molasses and water solution near where you hear the sound;
  • After a few hours go and check if there are any crickets stuck in the bait;
  • Throw the solution out, along with the cricket;
  • Keep doing this until there is no sound of the cricket from anywhere.

This is a very easy solution for tough times when cricket seems to be out of your sight. As crickets are attracted to the smell of molasses they will fall for the molasses and water bait. Keep doing this until there is no sound heard.

Final thoughts

Crickets are extraordinary climbers, who usually do not stop even at walls or any other flat surface. These chirpy and jumpy insects will crawl over walls without any trouble. You will find crickets over your walls during the rainy season and at night most of the time.
