Is There Any Height, Weight or Age Limit for Snow Tubing?

Snow tubing is an activity for ALL and almost every season. It doesn’t necessarily have to be in the winter and you don’t need to be in an expensive resort to go snow tubing. It doesn’t require a lot of strength or incredible balance.

All you have to do is sit in position and hold the handles tightly. Snowmaking technology is now available in many places which is why you can even enjoy it in the summer. 

What are the height requirements for snow tubing?

The height requirements vary depending on the resort or area you are snow tubing. Some places do not have height requirements. It also depends on the tubing style such as single tubers, tandem tubers, and family-style tubing. The usual requirement is a minimum of 33 inches or 3 feet tall.

How tall do you need to be to snow tube?

The suggested requirement is at least 42 inches if you are riding alone. If your height is around 33 inches to 43 inches then you should go snow tubing in a double tube or chain with an adult.

Children who want to snow tube on the snowy slopes should be at least 44 inches. There are other safer places to snow tube for children who are below 44 inches. For tandem style tubing, both riders should be at least 42 inches tall.

For tubing with family, all riders need to be at least 36 inches tall. It is recommended that you be at least 3 feet tall to snow tube on the snowy slopes. 

Does snow tubing have a weight limit?

There are weight limits if you want to go snow tubing depending on the resort and style of tubing. Many places do not list down the weight restrictions but most snow tubes have a weight limit of 300 pounds. If there is a tuber’s lift, they generally have a weight limit of 250 pounds.

Although there is no minimum weight to go snow tubing, there is a maximum weight limit. Here are some general weight limits. It could differ and it’s best to ask the instructor or some in charge. 

  • Single tubers: These tubes usually cannot carry more than 300 pounds. 
  • Tandem tubers: These can fit two riders and their weight should not exceed over 400 lbs (combined).
  • Family tubing: Each rider in the group should weigh less than 300 pounds. 

Is there any age limit for snow tubing?

There is generally no age limit for snow tubing. There are people who are over 70 that go snow tubing. There are more safety precautions that you need to take if you are over 70 but there are no age limits. But there is a minimum age requirement for snow tubing. We will discuss this further below. 

How old should a child be to go snow tubing?

It is recommended that a child should be at least four (4) years old to go snow tubing. Snow tubes go faster than sleds and cannot use their hands to slow the tube down which is why small children should not go for snow tubing.

They are harder to control. Moreover, parents cannot ride along with their children when it comes to snow tubing. But they offer double tubes so that you can sit on one side and your child on the other.

Many resorts have a separate tubing area just for children where the children are supervised by a parent or guardian while snow tubing.

Can babies go snow tubing?

Unfortunately, babies cannot go snow tubing due to safety reasons. Unlike sledding, you cannot put your baby in the same tube with you. Snow tubing is fast and requires a bit of riding experience. 

There are too many dangers involved. If your toddler eagerly wants to go snow tubing, you can prepare them for it from the age of two (2). There are lessons available to help toddlers join their families out on the slopes. 

Tubes can flip over and also bump into one and another due to the high speed. There are many places that will allow you to go snow tubing regardless of how old your baby is. However, it is suggested that you do not let your baby go snow tubing until they are at least four (4).

Can a 3 year old go snow tubing?

Some resorts allow children to go snow tubing with ages as little as 18 months. However, that is not safe and a lot of precautions need to be taken. A 3-year-old can go snow tubing if there is a separate tubing area made for children.

They need a slow-moving ‘magic carpet’ to reach the top. Very few resorts have this facility. Do not allow your children to the main tubing hill until the children’s tubing area. 

There are risks of head trauma so make sure your toddler wears a helmet. Do not let them sit at the bottom of the tube and remind them to keep their feet outside the tube. 

Is snow tubing fun for adults?

Absolutely! Snow tubing is an exciting winter activity that plenty of adults take part in. It is very similar to sledding. You can take in some refreshing mountain air and get in touch with nature. It is a great way to bond with friends and family, and you might also make new friends!

How to snow tube safely?

Snow tubing safely is very simple if you follow the instructions. Always listen to staff and take note of all the signs. Asides from proper winter wear, there are some other easy rules that you need to follow. Make sure to sit properly in your tube and do not engage in horseplay.  

Keep your feet up and if you have children with you, supervise them. Do not try to carry your child with you in the same tube. There should only be one user per tube.

Observe both sides before crossing a lane. Hold the handles properly and do not touch the lift cable. If something falls, do not try to retrieve it while riding. Another thing that is often forgotten is footwear.

You will have to walk in the snow even if it’s for a short period so winter footwear is necessary. You might slip or trip in the snow so be careful while walking. 

What do you need to wear for snow tubing?

You need to dress according to the wear when you go snow tubing. Always dress in layers and waterproof outerwear and boots are suggested.

You can wear hiking boots too. Another obvious suggestion is wearing warm socks and mittens. You will need to protect your hands from the cold. As long as it is comfortable and stays warm, you can wear gloves too.

Besides that, you should wear long thermal underwear made out of polypropylene or wool, sunglasses or goggles, and a hat. 

Your base layer should be made out of moisture-wicking material. It will help you stay warm and dry. The middle layer should be something that will keep you warm such as a hoodie made out of synthetic fleece. The top layer should be waterproof that will make sure to keep you dry. 

All of this is important for a smooth snow tubing journey. A final piece of advice is to always carry additional clothing, you never know when you might need it. Your gloves or mittens might get wet so it is essential to carry extras.
