For a fun and cool stroll on the snowy roads, we all trust out snowmobiles. The cute vehicles add more fun to a trip in a snowy region. It’s fun and safe.
But that’s not all. You can use your snowmobile on water as well. The vehicles have enough momentum to maintain its’ speed on the water. So get ready to see how you can use your snowmobile to ride a water surface with ease.
Do snowmobiles float?
The weight of the snowmobile does not make it easy to float. As a matter of fact, snowmobiles can’t stay afloat in the water at all. Most that can happen is the air in the gas tanks or the foam seats might give it a slow sink like a heavy weight. A redesigned one might, but it will need much work.
Snowmobiles are motor based sleds that help travel on snowy mountains and regions. The gears are very heavy and the scooter-like sleds are a great way of recreation in the snow and winter season.
These motors are not supposed to be used on water because they sink almost immediately.
However it is possible to modify the motor to make it float on water. But that takes a lot of redesigning and alteration. Which in most cases is not really worth it.
The weight of the snowmobile will never allow you to skim along the water body naturally. This is why you should not try to use your snowmobile as a boat, that is not what they are meant to do.
Can a snowmobile go over water?
While making it possible, it is very dangerous to use a snowmobile to skim over water. Most of the time, a stock snowmobile is used for this. Some people prefer to practice water skipping, going on the water with a snowmobile, with their old snowmobiles.
Water skipping needs much momentum and speed. With the right momentum, your sled should skim over the water perfectly. But if you lose momentum, even by a bit, you will find your snowmobile sinking instantly. This requires much experience and practice.
Though dangerous, the sport has two events based on it. The common advice for the practice is to not use new snowmobiles as they are not smooth to ride yet. It is also advised to tread lightly as a beginner.
How fast does a snowmobile have to go to go on water?
The speed of the snowmobile while water skipping depends on the weight most of the times. For per 100 kg weight the sled needs to go around 12 kilometer per hour. The calculations are 5 meter per hour for 150 lbs in terms of pounds.
If you can manage to get the speed up while keeping the sled’s throttle open, you can keep the tracks of the snowmobile on the water surface without sinking the entire motor. You will have to be very careful with the throttle. If it somehow bogs, you will sink with the motor.
Snowmobiles are typically fast motors and can go up to 60 in 3 to 6 seconds. The same speed is hard to maintain on the water surface. This is because the mobiles were not designed to skim on water. Try to learn from someone who is experienced to avoid any accidents.
How far can a snowmobile go on water?
There is no concrete calculated distance that a snowmobile can cover on water. The competitions can give a rough idea which varies and changes with the next event. But on an average, 150 meters can be covered with snowmobiles on water.
The record for the farthest distance cover on a snowmobile on water is 43.3 miles or 69.28 kilometers to be exact. The record was made by Kyle Nelson on Cowan lake, Canada. Since the record on 2005, no one has covered such a distance.
Snow mobiles are not meant to be skimmed on water. But it is possible with very high speed and the right momentum. The toughest part is to maintain the speed and momentum.
If the speed lowers by the slightest, the snowmobiles drops and sinks. This is why it is not common to cover a long distance on water with a snowmobile.
How to make a snowmobile float?
To get your snowmobile to float on water, you will have to do many alterations to the main body of the motor. The designs of the snowmobiles are not meant to float on water, they are for the snowy grounds. to make it work on water, you will have to follow some steps-
- The weight of the snowmobile will have to be lighter. for that you will have to strip the S and T out;
- Clutch the motors for high RPM and use a 1.25 inch track to accommodate the water crossing;
- Attach smaller gas tanks and light weight seats;
- Cut out and dethatch any extra seating on the snowmobile to cut off the extra weight;
- Use a large diameter PVC pipe for maximum momentum;
- Make sure the pipe is 12″ to 14″ in diameter.
- Curve the pipe around the perimeter and seal it back in place;
- Run an extra pipe at front to accommodate the extra weight.
Follow these steps to make your snowmobile lightweight and compatible on the water. Water skipping is very risky, especially with a heavy snowmobile. By trimming off the additional weights you can have more momentum and a safer ride.
How to ride a snowmobile on water?
Riding a snowmobile itself is a very time worthy sport as it requires much practice. So, it is very obvious that it will be very difficult when you go for a ride on water with a snowmobile. To make sure the ride is safe try to follow the given guidelines-
- Step 1: Get your motor ready. Once you have altered and made your snowmobile lighter weight, you can bring it on the banks of the water body and get started.
- Step 2: Just as you would on a snowy road, start the motors and start acceleration. However, try to start and keep the acceleration at a high momentum.
- Step 3: Keep the vehicle on a steep angle to thread through the water.
- Step 4: Start your gear and start gliding through the water, while maintaining momentum and balance.
- Step 5: Extend your legs and stand on your feet to maintain the center of gravity in check and have control.
There is no other trick or magic to it. You have to practice a lot to grasp this difficult sport. The thrill is worth the practice but make sure to be extra careful while doing so.
How do you get a snowmobile out of water?
Water skipping with a snowmobile is not easy at all. There will be many times when you find your snowmobile drowned in the water. Pulling it back up can be a hassle.
For this, you may need the help of a puller. Tow the snowmobile out of the water and muck and check if the water entered the engines or not.
Clean the access water and mud. Take out the parts to dry them off. Hopefully the entire thing will take only two to three days to dry off completely.
How do you skip water on a snowmobile?
Skipping on water with a snowmobile is an exciting and thrilling experience. It has become a very fascinating event as well. However, skipping water on a snowmobile is fairly difficult.
You will have to equip and properly alter your snowmobiles setting and make it light weight. Keep the acceleration and speed at high for better momentum. Start your gears and keep the speed up to not sink. Use your legs to maintain balance by extending them.
Try not to go full speed on the first try as you might get into severe accidents. Practice will give you more and better ideas on how to maneuver this difficult sport.
How do you drain water from a snowmobile?
If your snowmobile goes underwater or takes up much water from the riding, you will have to drain the excess water out. Others wish it might jam your engines and make them rusty. To drain water from a snowmobile you will have to –
- Find two valves near the engine;
- Undo the valves to help the water to drain out of the cranks;
- Put new gas in the engines;
- Pull and let the engines run for awhile with the valves still open;
- Afterwards plug the valves back up.
Draining water is fairly simple so try not to let any water rest in the engine and carburetors.
Snowmobiles are amazing for a cool adventure. And if the vehicle gets old, just modify it a little and use it to ride on the water surfaces. A light weighted vehicle with high acceleration and momentum is perfect for a ride on the water. But be sure to practice and stay safe.
